Overview

During the course the student will obtain the basic knowledge of mathematics necessary for the study of engineering at Blekinge Technical Institute as well as gain an understanding for mathematical applications, mainly in the field of science and technology.

Content

• Trigonometry and formulas
• Trigonometry and derivatives
• Derivatives and integrals
• Numerical methods for solving equations
• Discrete mathematics (combinatorics and sets)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student will be able to:
  • draw graphs of trigonometric functions and use these functions as models for actual periodical occurrence
  • derive and use the formulas needed to reformulate simple trigonometric expressions and solve trigonometric equations
  • calculate sides and angles in an arbitrary triangle
  • apply rules of derivation to trigonometric functions, logarithmic functions, composite functions, product and quotients of functions in problem solving
  • apply second derivative in various applications
  • determine antiderivatives and use these at applied problem solving
  • explain the meaning of the concept of the integral of the concept of integrals and clarify relations between integral and derivative as well as outline, interpret and utilize integrals in different types of basic applications.

Generic Skills

The following generic skills are trained in the course:
• ability to communicate with mathematical symbols
• ability to analyze a problem, critically evaluate it
and make conclusions
• ability for conceptual development through projects and group discussions as well as ability to formulate and motivate different methods of problem solving.

Time allocation
