The course is compulsory within the programme "Security Engineering", with start autumn semester 2012.
Overview
The purpose of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge in the construction of monitoring and security systems by studying basic principles of applied mathematics, applied physics, electrical engineering, electronics, metrology and computer technology.

Content
The course includes the following key basic elements:- definitions and concepts
- applied mathematics
- elementary Electrical engineering
- magnetic and electric fields
- light, photometry, laser technology
- acoustics
- circuit technology, chart reading, electrical safety
- power supply, cable technology
- digital and computer technology
- electrical noise
- sensors and detectors based on different physical quantities
- basics on building alarm and monitoring systems
Learning outcomes
On completion of course the student will:- have a knowledge of applied mathematics in order to perform simple calculations in physics and electrical engineering
- have a knowledge of basic electrical engineering, electronics, measurement technology, computer engineering
- have knowledge of various sensors and detectors and their physical principles
- able to analyse and describe simple alarm and monitoring systems.

Learning methods
The course is given on campus and includes lectures, tutorials and laboratory exercises. During the lectures and exercises the student go through theories and then apply them in laboratory sessions. The laboratory work is a complement to theoretical lectures to get a practical insight into how theories works. Most theoretical sections have a practical laboratory task associated with the section. At the end of the course, several laboratory exercises are combined into a smaller project. The course may also have individually executed assignments such as submitted-/exercise assignment alternatively examinations where students practice skills to use the course content as a whole as well as to use for the problem formulation relevant solution methods.Work placement

Lectures, exercises and laboratory sessions.Time allocation
On average, a student should study 400 hours to reach the learning outcomes. This time includes all the various available learning activities (lectures, self studies, examinations, etc.). To participate in a centrally coordinated examination, you must enroll in Student's Portal, no later than fifteen days before the examination.
Time and location for the examination will be published about 5 days in advance.
