Spatial planning is a challenging subject. It aims to combine and balance the economic, social and environmental concerns and needs in society. It is an exciting field of studies where new theories are defended and tried in each moment.

The Master’s programme in European Spatial Planning and Regional Development at Blekinge Institute of Technology provides students with a thorough understanding of spatial planning and regional development in Europe. The ambition is for students to acquire knowledge and skills necessary for a professional career in strategic decision-making positions.

If you are interested in spatial planning, regional development, innovation, sustainability, European issues, and enjoy making new friends in an international environment, then you have the profile to be a student on this programme.

The programme starts in September each year and is on a full time basis over the entire academic year (40 weeks). The programme contains five taught courses and a Master’s thesis.

The courses are:
1. ‘European Union and Spatial Development’ provides the foundation for the programme. The course reviews the history, structure, institutions and powers of the European Union, examines spatial implications of various sector policies.
2. ‘Social and Economic Cohesion’ examines social and economic disparities and inequalities between countries and regions. During the course key concepts and policy measures used to promote social and economic cohesion in Europe are analysed.
3. ‘Sustainable development’ reviews the development of environmental problems with special reference to their spatial dimensions. Sustainable development is examined both conceptually and empirically in relation to environmental protection, efficient use of energy and natural resources. The use of instruments for environmental assessment and sustainability assessment is introduced.
4. ‘Innovative regions’ provides an insight into the European Union policy to make the Union the most innovative and dynamic region in the world in 2010. The course provides knowledge of the new economic theory and its implications for policy-making and discusses the concepts of innovation, innovation systems and innovative regions.
5. ‘European Spatial Planning and Integration’ integrates sustainability, cohesion and innovation aspects, as well as planning and governance theory, by examining how the different aspects of planning and development in Europe are related to each other and under what conditions they may in fact strengthen each other. The course runs in parallel with the other courses and it outlines the evolution of the development of a concern for spatial planning in the EU. It also examines the key concepts and policy objectives of the recent European spatial development policy documents.
6. ‘Thesis’: work on the thesis starts during the autumn term but the main part of research and writing takes place in the spring term. Students write their thesis individually or in pairs/small groups, in close interaction with their supervisors. Students are encouraged to explore a research topic that is suitable for them, based on their previous education, future career plans and personal interests.
Problem-based learning is central to the programme. Lectures are combined with projects in which spatial planning policies and measures are investigated. Course work includes seminars, group work, workshops and preparation of term papers in close interaction with teachers.
Blekinge Institute of Technology hosts the leading Swedish school of spatial planning and provides top quality training and education in creative, modern surroundings combined with an exceptionally attractive environment. A student in Karlskrona is right in the middle of a world heritage site, where references to the city's exciting history are as present as the sound of waves from the Baltic Sea and the beautiful landscape of Blekinge region.

Det europeiska inflytandet och olika internationella kontakter har ökat: gränsöverskridande projekt och europasamarbete, gemensamma visioner och lösningar på planeringsproblem, ökat informationsutbyte inom miljö- och utvecklingsområdet är exempel på detta. I Sverige och i Europa finns ett ökat behov av personer med en specialistutbildning inom området europeisk planering och regional utveckling.

Mål

Målet för utbildningen är att förbereda studenterna för ett internationellt yrkesliv som specialister i europeisk planering och regional utveckling. Genom att kombinera din kandidatutbildning med en magisterexamen i europeisk planering och regional utveckling kommer du att vara väl förberedd för en karriär i strategiska, utredande och beslutsförberedande situationer – i Sverige eller utomlands.

Arbetsområden

Liksom ämnet, är yrkesområdet brett. Tidigare studenter på programmet har funnit jobb både i offentlig sektor och i det privata näringslivet som internationella utredare, projektledare för samarbetsprojekt, politiska rådgivare, utredare, samhällsplanerare, EU-experter, osv.

Innehåll

Programmet Europeisk planering och regional utveckling är en bred utbildning som sträcker sig från fysisk planering, transportplanering och näringslivs- och innovationsfrågor till samhällsplanering, socioekonomiska frågor och miljöfrågor. Programmets fokus ligger på europeisk nivå och på färdigheter som tydligt tillämpbara och till nytta i yrkeslivet: på programmet kommer du att lära dig praktiska redskap samt policy och regelverk, du kommer att bekanta dig med flera europeiska planerings- och utvecklingsprojekt och du kommer att få analysera och skapa konkreta förslag vars syfte är att skapa förändring i samhället.
Programmet ges på engelska för studenter från Sverige, Europa och resten av världen. Undervisning och handledning prioriteras och studenter och personal har nära kontakt i en informell atmosfär under utbildningstiden. Förutom kvalificerade lärare och professorer möter du som student många internationella gästföreläsare och personer som är yrkesverksamma inom planering och regional utveckling. Detta betyder att kopplingarna är goda både till praktisk verksamhet och till den senaste forskningen.

Vidareutbildning

Efter avslutad utbildning kan du studera vidare på andra magister- eller masterprogram i Sverige eller utomlands, i olika ämnen beroende på din grundutbildning (kandidatnivå). Du är även i många fall behörig att fortsätta som forskarstuderande inom ditt huvudområde.
